Winfred R. Massey, Sr., 91, of Lookout Mountain, went home to be with Jesus on January 19th, 2025.
Born on March 11, 1933, he lived a life deeply rooted in faith, family, and hard work.
Winfred is the eldest of eleven siblings. He was predeceased by his parents (John Wesley Massey and Elsie Smith Massey) and all his siblings except his brother, Aaron Massey. He cherished all his brothers and sisters—Bobby, Kenneth, Virgie, Barbara, Johnny, Aaron, Arlie, Wayne, Brenda, and Deborah—and shared with them a lifetime of laughter and love.
Winfred was a devoted husband to Tommie Ruth Bohannon for 72 remarkable years. Together, they built a life and a legacy on Lookout Mountain, beginning with their first home, which Winfred constructed by hand.
A man of many talents, Winfred was a farmer, timber worker, foundry worker, and an accomplished “wheeler and dealer”. He had a gift for mechanics and a passion for the outdoors, enjoying hunting and exploring the mountain he called home. Known for his honesty, hard work, and trustworthiness, he was a man of his word who always put others first.
A man of deep faith, Winfred loved the Lord and sang praises in his church with joy and devotion. His faith was the cornerstone of his life and an inspiration to all who knew him.
Winfred’s greatest pride and joy were his family. He was the beloved father of W. Rufus Massey Jr. (Mary Anne), Cheryl Williams (John), Sabra Price (Butch), Daryl Massey (Kelly), and Tracy Massey (Paula). He also leaves behind numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews who will carry on his legacy of love and unity.
His life was a testament to the values he held dear: supporting, encouraging, and providing for his family while fostering a spirit of harmony and togetherness. Winfred’s greatest wish was for his family to remain close, support one another, and continue cherishing the mountain property and home he treasured.
Winfred Massey was a man who lived simply, loved deeply, and left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His family and friends will forever remember his steadfast love, enduring faith, and unwavering commitment to the legacy he built on Lookout Mountain.
Winfred was a member of Mt. Carmel Gospel Church on Lookout Mountain in a small community known as Masseyville. The little white church was founded and built in the early 1900’s by his father, John Wesley Massey, along with other members of the Massey family, community members and other churches in the area. Winfred wanted nothing more than to bring anyone who would listen and hear the message, to the Lord. Some of his last words were, “I’m ready to meet my Jesus.” Before he passed away he told his children to love one another, to always get along and to take care of “Mama”.
A celebration of Winfred’s life will be held on Sunday, January 26th at 2:00 in the chapel at Moore Funeral Home in Trenton, GA. The service will be led by Brother Jody Massey, Daryl Massey and Rufus Massey. Following the service, he will be laid to rest at Mount Carmel Gospel Church Cemetery.
The family invites friends to pay their respects at the funeral home on Saturday, January 25th, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM and on Sunday from 12:00 PM until the service begins.
In place of flowers please make donations in his honor to the restoration fund of historic Mount Carmel Gospel Church.
