Wendell Austin McCormick, 83, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, September 12, 2021. Wendell was born October 1, 1937 in Henegar, AL to the late Walter Harrison and Jessie Mae Ellis McCormick.
Wendell was a crane operator for Combustion Engineering and Austin Powers for 40 years. He was a devout Christian and member of Calvary Independent Missionary Baptist Church in Trenton, GA. He was a U.S. Army Veteran where he served as a Military Police. He was also a Baptist preacher, adult Sunday school teacher for 25 years, little league baseball coach for 10 years and was an avid University of Alabama football and Brooklyn / Los Angeles Dodgers baseball fan.
He was the caption of the 1957 Dade County High School baseball and football teams with the football team winning the Sub-Region Championship and the baseball team winning the Georgia Class C State Championship with him playing shortstop. He was also a member of the 4th Army Flag Football Championship team in 1959 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
He was preceded in death by his former wife Barbara Jean McCormick; sons, Chris and Wayne McCormick; brothers, T.A. Norman and B.C. “Mac” McCormick; and sisters Annie Jeanette McCormick, Luna Lewis and Ella Mae Henager. Also, his beloved grandson Stephen McCormick.
He is survived by his brother Winfred and Lou McCormick of Ringgold, GA and sister Wynona Reeves of Rising Fawn, GA; daughter in-laws Penny McCormick of Trenton, GA and April McCormick of Ooltewah, TN; grandchildren, Michael McCormick, Jennifer McCormick, Stephanie Fitzgerald, Kristen McCormick, Melissa (Ethan) Blevins, and Miranda (Roy) Adair; great grandchildren, Tori and Taylor Reed, Ryleigh and Raelynn Fitzgerald, Koty and Kayleigh Norton, Kaycee and Blake Adair, along with several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Tim Renshaw and Brother Billy Wallace officiating. Interment with full Military Honors will be held in Trenton Baptist Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at Moore Funeral Home on Monday, September 13, 2021 from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM and on Tuesday from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM at the church.
