HIGDON AL: James Roy Gentry, age 79, passed away at his home Saturday, July 23, 2022.
He enjoyed going to church, singing “Just Any Day Now”, and being with his family. He received the Holy Ghost July 24, 1986, and was a member of Higdon Holiness Church.
Roy worked as a crane operator, a cabinet maker for Brother Eugene Gamble and retired from Dixie Yarn where he fixed machines.
He was preceded in death by his son, “Benji” Roy Gentry; parents, Newton Gentry and Julia Oma Davis Gentry; brothers, Robert Gentry, Richard Gentry, and three infant brothers; parents-in-law, James and Tibb Whitley; brother and sister-in-law John Willard and Jewel Dean Whitley.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years marrying on June 1, 1973, Fay Gentry, and daughter, Rita Gentry; brothers and sisters-in-law Oron and JessieMae Whitley, Bithal and Darlene Whitley; several nieces and nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
The family would like to thank his hospice care workers, Charlotte Turner, Carolyn Short , Leah LaHayne and everyone that has brought food and coming for visits.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM ET Wednesday, July 27, 2022 at Higdon Holiness Church with Reverend Edwin Spurgeon officiating.
The family will receive friends and family Monday from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM Tuesday from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM and Wednesday from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM ET at Higdon Holiness Church. The family requests that masks be worn.
Interment will be held in Oak Lawn Memorial Park
