NEWELL C. BLEVINS
LOOKOUT VALLEY, TN: Newell C. Blevins of Lookout Valley passed away peacefully at home on October 19, 2013 from complications of congestive heart disease and kidney failure.
He was born September 2, 1920 near Ider, Alabama where he lived until going to work for Combustion Engineering in Chattanooga in 1939. He worked for Combustion Engineering for 40 years prior to and after WWII.
He served his country in the army from March 1943 until his discharge as a sergeant in February 1946. As an aircraft welder, he stayed in the United States but played a vital part in the war effort, fabricating parts and repairing military planes so our servicemen could continue flying overseas to protect our country.
After the war, he came back to Chattanooga reentering the workforce at Combustion Engineering – using his knowledge manufacturing parts for nuclear plants. He worked his way up to general foreman position with several foremen reporting to him. He retired from Combustion after 40 years in 1979.
He married the love of his life, Geneva Emmett Blevins, on April 18, 1944 and church became a very important part of their lives.
At Bethlehem Baptist Church in Ider, Alabama, he was saved and baptized August 15, 1937 and was ordained as a deacon November 24, 1954. His church membership remained there until his death.
He was a member of the Ashlar Lodge #677 of Free and Accepted Masons in Ider, Alabama for over 50 years.
He was preceded in death by Geneva, his wife of 60 years, his parents, and two brothers: Orum N. Blevins and Arlin M. Blevins.
Survivors are daughter and son-in-law Gayle Elisabeth and Jerry Wells; special nieces and nephew, Beth Austin, Joyce Kile, Milton Blevins, and Shirlyn Card who helped care for him during this difficult time; special nephew Dan Austin and cousin Donald Blevins; sisters-in-law Delorice Emmett Morris and Barbara Smith Emmett as well as 9 other nieces and nephews and their families.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 23rd at 2:00 PM EDT in the Chapel of Moore Funeral Home with Dr. David Gregg and Rev. Fred Glover officiating. Burial will be held in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery, on Hwy. 75, Ider, AL.
Pallbearers – Milton Blevins, Malanie McCarty, Bill Emmett, Beth Austin, Jimmy Brown and Pete Pedigo.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 22nd 4:00 PM ~ 8:00 PM EDT
