Amanda “Mandy” Josephine Bates, age 96, passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2020.
Mandy was born May 24, 1924, in Flatwoods, Alabama to Marion and Jeanette (Brown) Morgan. She was a member of Rising Fawn Methodist and retired from Combustion after 24 years of service. She and her husband, Bill, operated Big Sandy Golf Club on Sand Mountain before moving to Okeechobee, Florida to manage a golf course there. After Bill’s death, Mandy returned to the mountain and resumed her role at Big Sandy. She was a fixture there for many years and immensely enjoyed talking golf with the regulars and giving big discounts for those new to the game. She was fiercely loyal and loving to her sisters, nieces and nephews.
Mandy was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Obie Allen and Bill Bates; sisters Carolyn Brown, Ruth McGill and Jo Brown Wilkie; brothers F.M. and Jimmy Morgan; niece Diane Morgan and stepsons Bobby and Bo Bates.
Survivors include her sister, Bobbie McCormick of Rising Fawn; nephews David Brown (Trenton), Joel McCormick (New Salem), Shane McCormick (Rising Fawn), Matt McGill (Red Bank) and Danny Morgan (Trenton); nieces Thlisa Ambrose (Rising Fawn) and Martha Rowell (Trenton).
A graveside service will be held at Trenton Baptist Cemetery on Saturday, October 31, 2020 at 11:00 AM with Brother Eddie Cantrell officiating.
In lieu of flowers, have a “Mandy dog” cooked in a Crock Pot without water, topped with mustard and slaw.
