Edith Bailey Justice, 86, of Ider, AL, passed away peacefully at her beloved home on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, surrounded by her family. Born on April 12, 1938, to W.M. and Virgie Holcomb Bailey, Edith lived a life of devotion, strength, and quiet grace. She was a woman who gave her heart freely and never stopped giving, forever leaving an imprint on the lives of those fortunate enough to be loved by her.
Edith was a wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who personified love. With a servant’s heart and hands that were never idle, she transformed her home and garden into sanctuaries filled with life, color, and warmth. She poured as much care into her garden as she did into her family—nurturing each bloom and each person with gentle strength and boundless patience. To us, she was the heart of our family, and her love was the thread that wove us all together.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Roy Justice, who stood by her side in love and partnership for a lifetime. She leaves behind her cherished children, who were her pride and joy: Larry (Deborah) York, Sharlene (Billy Ray) Thompson, Carol (Gary) Hill, Gena (Kent) Weldon, and Joy Downes. Each generation Edith helped nurture grew under her steady, watchful eye, and she found true joy as grandmother to Lorrie York, Adam York, Kellie Blevins, April Hill, Meghan Collins, Gage Weldon, Gavin Weldon, Greyson Weldon, Griffin Weldon, Joseph Downes, and Bailey Downes. Her role as great-grandmother was a crown she wore with pride, delighting in each great-grandchild—Harley Smith, Ada Smith, Braylee York, Kaislee York, Morgan Miles, Tyler Scott, Marcus Mason, Judah Hill, Dallas York, Isaac York, Alexis York, Phoenix Collins, Destiny Collins, and Rhett Weldon—as well as her great-great-grandchildren, Colson Miles and Harper Scott.
Edith’s legacy also lives on through her siblings: Junior Bailey, Violen Bailey, Lee Roy (Glenda) Bailey, and her sister, Dortha (Gerald) Chapman. She now joins her parents, W.M. and Virgie Holcomb Bailey, and her beloved siblings who preceded her: G.A. Bailey, Imogene Chapman, Leddy Bell Weldon, Isabell Manis, Ruby Runningriver, and Mildred Rogers. Her precious granddaughter, Amanda York, also awaits her in Heaven.
The family will honor Edith’s life with a funeral service on Friday, November 8, 2024, at 1:00 PM ET in the Trenton Chapel of Moore Funeral Home, officiated by Brother Charles Smith and Brother Scott Crye. She will be laid to rest in Fuller Cemetery in Ider, AL, where the beauty of the land will forever embrace her. Family and friends are invited to gather on Thursday from 4:00 – 8:00 PM ET and again on Friday from 11:00 AM until the service.
Today, we celebrate Edith as a woman who embodied grace and resilience—a woman whose kindness and love were as abundant as the flowers in her garden. Her gentle presence was a gift to us all, and her spirit lives on in the strong roots of the family she so dearly loved. Though she has left our sight, the memory of her laughter, her wisdom, and her boundless love will forever bloom in our hearts.
