Claude Winn Stephens (C.W.), known as “Nane” to his brothers, “Daddy” to his kids, and “Grandpa” to his grand-babies, passed away on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at the age of 81. He was a true mountain man who loved the outdoors and spent his years fishing, hiking and driving the long road from Florida to Georgia. No matter where he roamed, he always returned home. He was a strong, sturdy presence to his family, and he could be counted on. He had an entrepreneur’s spirit, a songbird’s whistle, and the determination of a dozen men. He loved his grandkids dearly and never stopped slipping $20 bills to them under the table when the parents weren’t looking. We’ll always remember his cornbread and buttermilk, voice like Johnny Cash, and the sounds of a Western movie playing in the living room. He was loved in return and will be missed.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy A. Stephens; parents, Roy and Opal Stephens; sons, Charles and Clifford "Cliff" Stephens; siblings, Arthell Carroll, Wanda Rinehartt, Eugene Stephens, and Sue Cloud.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Vanessa S. (David) Wallace and Opal F. (Roy) Walden; daughter in-law, Anna Mae Stephens; grandchildren: Melissa Sayler, Michelle Roberts, Charles Stephens, Clifford Stephens, Patrick Stephens, Kate Walker, Victoria Corneau, Christopher Wallace, Shawn Wallace; and siblings, William Stephens, Jessie Mae Whitley, Joy McClain, David Stephens, Timothy Stephens, Gale Goins and Elizabeth Heaton.
